I move messages to various folders within Thunderbird based upon some rules. One problem is that the most, if not all, of the openoffice.org mail lists do not set themselves as the sender and thus I had to add a new category: Reply-To to my available header fields so that I could select the mail list as one of the variables for filing messages. Also, it is not necessary to join this list in order to post messages to it. However, you may or may not receive replies to your questions.
