4) Create Word file on Windows system (using MS-Word). Copy the .doc file from network. Size reported as 53,345 bytes on Windows and Linux boxes
Does it happen if you create a Word file that contains only an 'a'?
5) On Linux box, open the .doc file, change one character and save as .doc file. Size now reported as 121,807 bytes.

So what's "adding the padding" to .doc files?
This is reproducible any time, Using OO 2.0.3.

If I repeat this using OO on a Windows box, the huge discrepancy in file
sizes goes away, so it's clearly a Linux thing.
Should have mentioned that the documents do not contain any graphics or
images - just plain text with simple formatting. I found that there has
been issues with compressed/uncompressed graphics, but this isn't the
problem here.
Is this a known feature, bug, problem etc? Any help gratefully received.
