Although some one pointed a concrete solution or explanation, the fact is that the structures of this documents are so complex that the size of the saved files depends of so many factors that it's (almost) impossible the establish a correlation with the size of the file and some particular aspect of the contents of the document. I worked with Word more them 10 years and I remember the size "jumps" of the doc files, specially with pics. Once I detected that a particular graphic of some Kb extended the file some Mb, remaining the file unstable. Deleted it reinserted it and all went ok after.
