1. You are correct. Calc files cannot be edited by more than one user
at a time.
2. The long opening time for larger files is the subject of at least one
issue.
Perhaps you could lend your support to getting it fixed by filing some
comments and/or voting for the issue. You have to register with
www.openoffice.org first.
