The icon you mention turns on/off the automatic spell checker.
Autocorrect is different. It automagically changes things like 1/2 (three
characters) into a single symbol; it changes things like "st" and "nd"
suffixes to numbers (1st, 2nd, ...) into superscripted single symbols; and
so on and so on.
