Is it feasible for you to use a master document as your main document and a subdocument for notes?

That's actually not a bad idea. It's not quite what's being asked for, but it's
useful in a pinch. But if we're already using a master document for a long
document, it's not going to work as well. Still, I might try it sometime.

I think what Eric is requesting is something like the notepad feature in
RoughDraft. When I was experimenting with different free word processors before
I settled on OOo, I really liked that feature in RoughDraft. You open a
document in the main pane of RoughDraft, and a notepad for that document opens
in a second pane. It's pretty slick. I requested that in my registration survey
for OOo, but don't really have any hopes that it will be implemented. I'd be
thrilled if the Writer developers proved me wrong, though.
I was thinking later that it would be better to use the master document for notes. If you are using the master document for a long document, couldn't you use one subdocument for notes?

I don't hold out any hope for the request you added to registration. You need to file an issue. (Even then, some of the responses can be hasty and cavalier and, even if the issue gets serious attention, you are in for a long wait.)

Another possibility is to use a notebook app. When I first migrated to Linux (and, therefore, OOo), I set up a master document with a series of subdocuments as a notebook - which Eric could do for his notes but Writer is cumbersome for any task let only that one.

Now I use kjots for notes. On windoze I used notelite; it lacks the "chapter" feature of kjots but still enables you to set up a page of notes for each Writer document. Not as good as having Notes linked to the document but much better than having to open a separate text file for each Writer file.
