In Windows XP the mail client is set through Internet Explorer (not
sure
of English wording, my Windows is Italian, and I seldom use it):
start IE then Tools > Internet Options > the Programs tab > drop down
list Mail Program; there you should have Thunderbird, just select it
and confirm.

Before I installed Firefox on my Win XP Pro system, IE was my default browser. When I
installed Firefox it asked me if I wanted it to be my default browser. I said
"yes".
I would have thought that, similarly, Thunderbird would ask, at installation
time, if you want it to be the default mail client. Does it not?
may be it actually does (or did in Pete's case), but, according to my
past experience, sometimes, if the mail client is not Outlook Express,
IE changes it back to it.
Kind regards,
Giuseppe Castagno.
