These anecdotes help to lighten my day, even though I know they are
inconvenient to the people involved.
You don't say what type of document. This applies for Calc and Writer
and probably for the other apps.
Use View >Toolbars and select "Form Controls". You will see an icon for
"Design Mode On/Off". Clicking on that should enable you to select the
symbol and delete it.
I hope so.

My mom was trying out NeoOffice (which is based on OpenOffice.org
2.0.3) on her new Intel Mac (10.4.7) and she saw something that told
her to customize her installation (I think this was a pop up window
intended as a help feature). Anyway she navigated her way into some
sort of preferences trying to set what she called a "theme".
Anyway, she ended up with a megaphone symbol in her document. Is there
an easy way to get rid of this? I told her to click on it and then
press delete to get rid of it, but she said that didn't work. I though
it might be a macro, ole, or plugin, but after experimenting with it,
I couldn't get the same symbol by inserting those. I have a hard time
believing it is a sound, because she doesn't have any on her Mac, she
doesn't play CDs or RIP them on her Mac, and she doesn't have an
Internet connection, so I don't know how she could find a sound to put
in there. This is definitely an OpenOffice.org/NeoOffice thing as when
she quit NeoOffice, it went away. I think it is just in one document.
