Thanks, she was probably using Writer. If you think that is funny, guess
what she calls NeoOffice - that "little ship" program. Sometimes I
wonder if it would be better for her to use a simpler program, but
Abiword isn't Intel native or very stable and I use NeoOffice, so I can
help her with most of what she runs into. My mom is at the adventurous
stage where she still doesn't have a good foundation, but she enjoys
changing all the settings. I am so glad she doesn't use Linux - she
would have some serious problems with all the setting she would change.

You don't say what type of document. This applies for Calc and Writer
and probably for the other apps.
Use View >Toolbars and select "Form Controls". You will see an icon
for "Design Mode On/Off". Clicking on that should enable you to
select the symbol and delete it.
