What it means is that Microsoft has had its oxygen supply cut off.
This is something that they usually inflict upon its competitors. Said
competitors usually go out of business within a year.
Over the past two years, Microsoft has instituted a number of
cost-cutting measures, because they no longer have the income that they
used to have. They also have publicly admitted that Linux, and OOo have
had a substantial impact on their income, and can expect to have even
more losses.
