Protection of sheets and cells can be removed - however OOo should
still require a password to be entered (if it has been set that way in
excel).

Opening and editing spreadsheets (after entering a password) is still
supported, however if you re-save the files in the excel file format
protection will be lost. This is due to MS method of protecting there
files. It can easily be broken, but can't be implemented without
licenses.

OOo security is much better and should be used over MS office format
protection...
