The most probable reason for this is that the fileassociation for .rtf is set to MS Word. To change this right-click on the rtf-file, then choose 'Open with ...'. In the dialog choose OpenOffice and click the checkbox that says something like 'Do this from now on with this filetype'. Finally click OK to make the change permanent. If OpenOffice is not shown in the list you must point it by clicking the 'Browse'-button.
