If you want to wait for 2.0.4 you should be able to get your existing version to work by associating .rtf files with OpenOffice. Normally they'd be associated with Wordpad so I'm surprised your system wants to open them with Word which is very different. Alternatively, run OpenOffice and open the file from there using File>Open Or *right* click on the file, choose "Open With" and, if OpenOffice is not already in the list of possible programs click Choose Program and select OpenOffice that way.
