Naomi's way works. You have to create the master document and all subdocs with 
the same template to get the formatting the way you want it. So, once you've 
created a document and then created a master document from it, you still need 
to make sure that you use the same template for the rest of the sub documents. 
Any template changes you make for the sub docs won't carry over to the master 
document if the master doc uses a different template.

In OOo, it's better to make formatting changes to the template rather than the 
document, unless the change is really for that document only. This becomes 
especially important when using the same template for multiple documents, like 
you do in a master document.
