First off I am going to make an assumption that you are using styles (you 
should be if you arn't)

So the page style for the first page should be set to  "First Page"
The following page should be set to "default" or what ever you have changed it 
to.. if you change following style on default first page styel..  you insert 
your index here..  after the index you insert a "manual page break" when you 
use the box.. set the new page number to 1.
