This really works well; I have been using my thumb drive for awhile to bring
portable software (OO) around with me at school. There are other programs
that you can also put on your drive, like Scribus and GIMP. These have
gotten me out of many jams when I needed to write a paper or edit an image,
they are very useful.

Dan,
It's not a silly question. You most certainly can run OpenOffice.org
from a thumb drive.
You can download OOo and a large number of other Open Source software
applications aready configured to run on a thumb drive from:
www.portableapps.com

You will need at least a 250Mb drive to run OOo, although it's better on
a 512Mb or greater.
