General question - can anyone point me to some documentation which explains sizing options in frame styples. For example, I can not figure out what "Width - automatic" and "Height - autosize" do. I have looked through the usual sources (on-line help, users manual, web site documentation and FAQ) and have not been able to get a clear understanding of this. My problems are exemplified in the questions below.
I can't comment it. I don't understand reasons to use frames for graphics in writer documents and try to avoid that feature.

Specific questions
When I assign a caption to a Graphic, I would like to be able to be able to do several things which I can't figure out how to do ...

1. Create a caption that starts with "Figure 1.1" instead of "Illustration 1.1" (I know that I can edit the text in the caption after it is created, but this is awkward)
You can. When you chose Insert - Caption in Category combo box write your own caption title - Figure or anything else, then write your caption text and press ok. This will create separate style for your captions (for instance Figure), so you will be able to index it. Next time title Figure will be available from Category meny. You will be able also use it with Autocaption function.

2. Have the caption above the graphic instead of below. (I know that I can drag the graphic down within the frame after it is created and this moves the caption to the top, but this is also awkward)
This is discussed before in this list. Try to search in archive for caption. It is possible, but not directly. The idea is to define new style, for instance Figure with following style Drawing. Before inserting graphics go to line where caption will be located and write Figure (if caption Category is Figure), then Insert - Field - Other and chose Variables. If you defined Figure as caption style (category) before, then you will see it in list of number range. Chose it and in field below called Value write Figure +1. Then press Insert. You will have Caption Figure 1. Next time you have just to chose Figure in variable fields number range and press insert to have caption number. After pressing Enter text will switch to Drawing style and you can insert image and anchor it as character.

3. Link the frame size to the graphic size. As I alter the size of the graphic or the frame (which includes the caption), sometimes the size of the other changes accordingly and sometimes it doesn't. (In some cases the graphic appears to be partly outside of the frame.) Without a better understanding of how these items are sized, I can not figure out a consistent pattern.
I don't see reasons to use frames around graphics and could only recommend to avoid them.

4. Is there any way to remove a caption from a graphic (if I select the frame and delete it, I lose the graphic too)?
Just delete it.

5. Is there any way to change the characteristics of a caption (eg. change the "Numbering captions by chapter option) once it is created (without deleting the whole thing, reinserting the graphic and recreating the caption). (Note: this is distinct from changing the Paragraph Style features of the caption - which I can do)
I'm not sure I understand question. An example could be helpful
