OpenOffice.org (OOo) is an office program just like MS Office and
Word Perfect. It will partially read Word Perfect files. (It will
display the text of the WP file but not any graphics in it.) It will
NOT save documents in the WP format. So, what you thought you read in
the Houston (TX) Chronical is not accurate. WP is a Corel program
which is sold on the open market. There is no legal free version of
it.
If you want to try OOo, feel free to go to
http://download.openoffice.org/2.0.4/, click Windows (if that is the
operating system you use). Then follow the directions for downloading
the OOo file. This is a large file (more than 90 MB). If you have
dial-up access to the internet, you should use a download manager to
download it. (IE will not work very well in this regard.) If you have
access to broadband, it should take less than 30 minutes to download
it. Dial-up takes several hours.
