You attempted to use the version of X11 from the Apple site, but this is for an older version of Mac OS X, 10.3, which did not come with any of the X11 code.

First, X11 for Mac OS X 10.4 came with the operating system but is not installed by default as not all Mac OS X users will need it to run UNIX programs. Second, you need to have access to your installation media set (DVD disks). Third, you will need to remove X11 from your computer. This requires logging in as an administrative user. This cannot be done as an regular user with no administrative rights to the system. I am making the assumption that you have not enabled the superuser, root on your system. Fourth. Go to the Applications -> Utliities folder and drag the X11 item to the trash. Fifth. Go to the MacIntosh HD item on the desktop and open it. Click on the Library folder and then Receipts. Drag the X11user.pkg item to the trash. Sixth. Insert your Installation disk into the optical drive. Wait until the installation screen appears. Scroll down until the Optional Packages item appears. Click on this to open it. You should see a screen with installable packages. Click on the X11user package (X11user.pkg) item ONLY. There is another package X11SDK, but this is not needed to use OpenOffice.org. Wait for the installation to complete before doing ANYTHING ELSE with your Mac. This should take approximately five to ten minutes depending on the speed of your Mac and how full the hard drive is. Seven. Close the installation window and any other windows you opened for the installation. Eject the installation disk and put it in a safe place. Eight. Downaload OpenOffice.org a second time. Please make sure that you download the Intel version and not the Power PC version. Nine. Click on the downloaded file. This will verify the file and open a new folder. Drag the OpenOffice.org 2.0 item to the Applications folder and drop it there. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RUN OPENOFFICE.ORG FROM THE DOWNLOADED FILE. You should see a "Do you want to use the System fonts" dialog. > I finally gave up. You folks are developers and computer Wizards. > I've been using a computer since the very first Mac came out. If you are in the Tucson, Arizona area, I might.
