An interesting thought, and one I've shared from time to time (especially when watching some SF show that includes a "universal" computer interface.
Unfortunately, the reality of the situation is that for such a universal interface to occur, it would have to be presented by a universal provider. This means all of the various OS vendors have to come to a common agreement (yeah, right), or there is only one OS vendor (monopoly).
