Lots of good replies earlier in the forum, including step by step
(thanks to [EMAIL PROTECTED]):
First, X11 for Mac OS X 10.4 came with the operating system but is
not installed by default as not all Mac OS X users will need it to
run UNIX programs.
Second, you need to have access to your installation media set (DVD
disks).
Third, you will need to remove X11 from your computer. This requires
logging in as an administrative user. This cannot be done as an
regular user with no administrative rights to the system. I am
making the assumption that you have not enabled the superuser, root
on your system.
Fourth. Go to the Applications -> Utliities folder and drag the X11
item to the trash.
Fifth. Go to the MacIntosh HD item on the desktop and open it.
Click on the Library folder and then Receipts. Drag the X11user.pkg
item to the trash.
Sixth. Insert your Installation disk into the optical drive. Wait
until the installation screen appears. Scroll down until the
Optional Packages item appears. Click on this to open it. You
should see a screen with installable packages. Click on the X11user
package (X11user.pkg) item ONLY. There is another package X11SDK,
but this is not needed to use OpenOffice.org. Wait for the
installation to complete before doing ANYTHING ELSE with your Mac.
This should take approximately five to ten minutes depending on the
speed of your Mac and how full the hard drive is.
Seven. Close the installation window and any other windows you
opened for the installation. Eject the installation disk and put it
in a safe place.
Eight. Downaload OpenOffice.org a second time. Please make sure
that you download the Intel version and not the Power PC version.
Nine. Click on the downloaded file. This will verify the file and
open a new folder. Drag the OpenOffice.org 2.0 item to the
Applications folder and drop it there. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RUN
OPENOFFICE.ORG FROM THE DOWNLOADED FILE. You should see a "Do you
want to use the System fonts" dialog.
Perhaps it would be worth adding this to the Apple Download site in
large letters as it comes up so frequently on the forum? Guilty
myself, took a little while to find and install! A key point is that
X11 is on the install disc for Tiger / 10.4, and on the wbsite for
Panther / 10.3.
or (thanks to [EMAIL PROTECTED]):
Here is the problem: Apple does not install the X11 windowing system
that is needed by OpenOffice.org 2.0.4. You have to install it.
How: This is described in great detail on the Mac OS X porting web
site. I will summarize here:
1. Find your Tiger installation/upgrade diskset.
2. Place the installation DVD into your optical drive.
3. Wait for the upgrade installation screen to show. You can also
install optional packages using this disk. Select this.
4. Navigate until you see the X11 User Package (X11user.pkg).
Select this package and ONLY this package.
5. Accept the license if required. This will start the installation
process. This can take quite some time if you have a slow processor
(which I doubt) and if your hard drive is nearly full.
6. Once the installation complete window appears, click close and
then eject the installation disk. Place the installation disk in a
safe place (preferably where you found it.)
7. Attempt to use OpenOffice.org. You should be greeted with a
dialog asking if you want to use the fonts installed on your Powerbook.
There is a native version of OpenOffice.org in progress which will
eliminate the need to install the X11 windowing system.

This is a returning question about OO on Mac on this mailinglist.
What I know of it is that you need to install the X11 from the CD
that came with your Mac. The one on the Apple-site is for an
earlier OS.
Maybe one of the Mac-users on the list can add something usefull to
my answer?

To whom it may concern.
I have a question concerning OpenOffice for MAcOSX 10.4. I've
downloaded your programm and tried to install it but I was told to
install Apple X11 first. I did so nevertheless my system already
had a programm like X11 but later.
When I retried installing OO it still said I need to install X11.
What does it take for me to install OO on my intelmac?
Thanks a lot for your help!
