Yes, the news group for OOo requires that you be subscribed. Others I have used 
do not; I jumped to a wrong conclusion.

although I have never received a message back from them.
b) I have seen many posts to news groups using this address; that's where I got 
the idea.
c) Not sure how private it really is; my real address shows in the e-mail 
*headers*.
