Yes, if the backup is done to prevent such scenarios, then an extra HDD is not the ultimatte solution, of course, however it's a nice complement. A removable HDD, USB or Firewire or whatever, could be a solution though. And still, the USB flashdrive solution could also work, depending on some things. And about checking the backup, it's a good idea of course, but I have seen CD's that don't work properly after a few years even if it worked perfectly when it just had been created and verified. Of course I could test the backup CD's every year or so, but that's also a lot of work if there are many CD's.
