That makes sense... I thought it would be something like that. I did the
install on a second
machine just to make sure I wasn't doing something stupid. Well, I guess I
was, since I
hadn't installed Writer.
I'll do that. I am working on some machines at a client's site where I'm
hooked up to an
Industrial process, so even getting Word and Excel had to be 'justified'.
Since I do all my
design and training with PowerPoint, I needed to cover that base.
I have had some experience with a previous install of OpenOffice (previous
version)
and it was fine. It's noticeably slower than Office, but the features are
much better and its'
heart is in the right place. Fortunately, I got to spec. three brand new
machines for work so
got lots of horsepower, and performance is not noticeably degraded.
Thanks for the answer. I have already evangelized one co-worker!

Hi:
Downloaded 2.0.4. Installed only Draw and Impress. (XP
SP2, new 1Gb RAM, dual core AMD CPU etc. etc.). Booted
Draw. Went to Help menu. Opened Index. Selected a topic
on the left. Nothing appears on the right. Same from
Contents leaf.... pick a topic (expand to get to a topic,
then click) and nothing appears on the right.
Now I DID do a custom install since I only wanted Draw and
Impress installed, but I don't think I missed any key
component. I made sure Draw and Impress Help were selected.
I will do another Custom Install and make sure all the
Extensions at the bottom are selected, since I know I
de-selected some obvious irrelevant ones.
Just thought you should know.

This is one of the disadvantages of doing a custom install. Since
you did not install Writer, all of the functions that require Writer
will not work. It is very likely that Impress will not work as well
either. Text boxes will not probably work.
OpenOffice.org (OOo) is an integrated office suite. When one
application performs a task normally done by another application, it
uses that second application to do it.
Your problem should be solved by searching for setup.exe in one
of the OOo's folders (probably Program). Double click it to begin the
installation program. Select Custom Install again. This time add
Writer to your system.
