You might find this interesting, then:
Windows 2000 sp4 (fully patched), OOo 2.0.4. I opened a document I had
created many months before with OOo and saved as a Word document. The
printer stored with it lacked the specific font, so the program
substituted, no sweat. I checked the properties, and I had no word count.
I then selected a valid printer for the document, then went back to
check the word count, and it worked. It appears the count won't occur
unless some activity occurs to the file (universal activity?) first.

I'm glad to say the Word count for selection as well as whole text is
working fine in the english OOo 2.0.4 on an iMac PPC with Panther
(10.3.9).
It functions when I open a existing document without making any
change to
it, as well as with a document I'm working on.
Apparently, there would be only an issue with Windows and Linux.
