This is apparently what happens with XP.  The desktop appears long
before it's usable.  KDE, on the other hand, responds to input almost as
soon as it's visible, even though it takes longer than XP to appear.
When you compare the time it takes from login to usable desktop, KDE is
faster, even though the XP desktip appears sooner.  On my work computer,
I find I can't do much with XP for at least a couple of minutes after
the desktop appears.
