Mr. Levin:

I agree. Smoke and mirrors has been used for quite some time in a
competing product (and not only MS.)  I hate not being able to use the
product when the GUI is presented.  I don't mind splash screens where
they show something other than a static "Welcome to XXX program".  In
the Mac OS X version, a bar moves across the bottom showing the load status.
