Annette: You are correct. The problem is not with OpenOffice.org but rather with a set of fonts provided by Apple. If you look at this mailing list's archives, the answer was given about one day ago and that is to remove the Vera True Type Fonts which are included with X11. Yes, Apple is aware of this problem and has withdrawn the X11 upgrade and will create a new one to fix this problem.
