Terry,
You're missing the big picture here. This is about serving the
customer to satisfy his needs. And what the 'customer' needs in this
case is an answer to his question. Not hundreds of discussions that he
is not interested in.
In the best case this customer may then get interested in other
features of the product, ask more questions and maybe start answering
questions of other users. At that point it is a point to subscribe to
the list and no earlier than that.
Arnold,
See my earlier message in reply to Harold re OOoForum at
http://www.oooforum.org . Apart from having to subscribe, you can ask
your question and get only the replies if you wish. Subscribing is, in
part, necessary to prevent the forum from becoming nothing more than an
agent for spam.

My heart bleeds. They get the software for nothing, perhaps make a
donation. Then it's too much trouble for the poor things to
subscribe to a list or a forum in order to seek help.
And, evidently, too much trouble to read the instructions linked to
the downloads page. Too difficult to filter their emails. Oh, the
pain.
I can't handle the trauma of contemplating their fate. Fortunately,
I am spared the agony of reading their emails. Anything to or from
the moderator goes straight to my "Deleted" folder. That's how I cope.
