Hi Brion
Many of us love free software too. (And "free" means a lot more than the
price!)
Are there any more free software like NVU and OpenOffice.org? your open
office is great and free as wonderful. Would be anything like
Flash
Not really. But there is an open source program that creates flash-based
demos of what is on your computer screen, called Wink.

adobe photoshop, imageready
The Gimp is a very full featured graphics/photo program. Like Photoshop,
it is difficult to learn.

If you are using Windows and want something easier to use, have a look at
PhotoFiltre (which is free for personal use)

Another option if you are using Linux is Krita. This may be available for
Windows (along with most of KDE) in the next year or so.

illustrator
Besides OpenOffice.org Draw (which I find quite good), there is also
Inkscape.

Quark/InDesign
Scribus is an excellent Linux desktop publishing program that is now also
available for Windows.

There are some ideas to get you started. After a while you'll start
wondering what you need Windows for - all of these programs (except
Photofiltre) work on Linux.
