If your talking about "File" in Openoffice.org, I don't see a "New"
option or anything I can select here.

Open Writer. Use File > New to give you a list of the other
applications. Directly below "File" you should see the "New" icon
which has an down arrow on its right. Click the arrow to get the same
list as File > New.
