This is because MS Word *cannot* read or write OpenOffice documents. Instead, when you use OpenOffice to save the document you *must* use the Save As feature and select "Microsoft Word ... (.doc)" as the "type" of file and ensure you have "automatic file name extension" checked. This will save the document in MS Word format which MS Word should then be able to read. If you are simply having problems with MS Word, then this is the wrong place to ask. MS Word is a Microsoft product; ask them. This is a support forum for OpenOffice which is *free* software that competes with Microsoft Office.
