Dan: Sorry for the top post but please DO NOT UPGRADE X11. There is a serious problem with some of the font files installed by it which will cause OpenOffice.org to stop functioning.
If you have updated X11 after installing it please review messages on this problem from this mailing list. The work around is in many of them.
