I will guess that X11 was not working before you did the re-install of Mac OS X. Now you will have to re-install X11 from the installation disk as the re-install did not install it and it should NOT have done so. X11 is an optional package, even upon a re-installation of the operating system. When prompted for updates, DO NOT INSTALL THE X11 UPDATE. This update has corrupted font files for the Vera style fonts and they are loaded when the OpenOffice.org program is started. It is simplier not to install the update than to do the workaround at the OpenOffice.org Mac OS X porting news site. Also, when you attempt to use the sudo program and you enter your password and it does not work (it should be the same password as the current logged in user) either you forgot the password, did not enter it correctly or your system has become corrupted for some unknown reason (if you require a login to access your system you should not be at this step.) My guess is that something happened with the user password. Please review this mailing list for updates to the X11 program from Apple, as we will announce when a fix is available, tested and will not 'break' OpenOffice.org.
