Hi Al,
Looks as though maybe you've gotten confused between two similar but
different 'outline' concepts. One is used in lists, and gives you
something like this:
1. Do this
2. Do that
a. blah blah
i)
..etc. That's what I was giving instructions for in the post you found.
You probably want heading-level outlines, though. Like this:
1. Introduction
Blah blah blah blah blah
2. Basic Hygeine
Blah blah blah
2.1 Using a Toothbrush
(instructions)
2.2 Using Soap
2.2.1 Not Getting Soap in Your Eyes
To do that, you might want to create a character style (for the
numbering/lettering) and you definitely need a paragraph style for each
outline level. Typically, you'd use Heading 1, Heading 2 etc. Then you
go to Tools -> Outline Numbering and set a paragraph style for each
outline level. If you select Show sublevels for each outline level past
1, you end up with the sort of numbering shown above (2.2.1 etc).
The TOC also references the heading-level outline settings.
For a more in-depth discussion of outline numbering, have a look at page
18 of
http://documentation.openoffice.org/manuals/oooauthors2/0207WG-WorkingWithStyles.pdf
(Using styles in outlining) and the following pages.
Does that help?

Hi all,
I'm new to the list. I searched the archives on Outlining in OOWriter. I
have used Outlining for manuscripts in M$ Word. It works very
intuitively as an "Outline" View.
Is there any chance that an outline View or another application that
does outlines will be usable in OO that functions at least as good as M
$? Workarounds with formatting and such as suggested in the archived
mailings is not an option for serious work. I have been using OO with
"outline" formatting as suggested by Naomi Kramer
(http://www.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=users&msgNo=130699),
but it can easily come unstuck in the formatting and more cumbersome
than an outliner app or M$ Outline View. It also lacks the "Typical
features of electronic outliners" as noted at:
http://www.innovationtools.com/Articles/ArticleDetails.asp?a=107.
M$ Word can do it all.
Is it so difficult to get a module for outlines in OO?
Is there any other Outline apps that works with OO that both import and
export seamlessly in OO, or is there an OpenSource alternative to do
Outlining and word processing simultaneously?
Regards,
Al
