Russel,
As a understand it Waleisah is already using OpenOffice.org, but needs
to know how to save her files to a format that can be read by MS-Office.
Waleisah,
To do that you need to use the File>Save as ... option instead of the
File>Save. In the dialogue you can specify the format in which he file
must be saved. Alternatively you can change the default-format for all
the documents you will be creating in the future. Go to
Tools>Options>Load/Save. Now you can change the type in which OpenOffice
will save your documents.
Finally the general thought on this list is that you should consider
whether it is necessary for the recipient of your documents to edit
them. If they don't then you could send the file in PDF, otherwise in
MS-Office. To convert a file to PDF or MS-Office just to send it to
others, you can use File>Send as PDF or File>Send as MS-Office.
You see there are several options to chose from. If you want to learn
more about how to do things in OpenOffice have a look at
documentation.openoffice.org. You will find howto's and userguides there.

I went to purchase Ms Windows and was told by the clerk there about
openoffice.org. I am attending graduate school online. I purchased
a new computer but unbeknownst to me, the .doc program and
Powerpoint that I have been using has been locked due to these
programs being offered to me on a trial basis. I am unable to submit
required documents because they have to be in .doc format and
powerpoint. Can you please tell me how I would go about downloading
the necessary programs to my computer from openoffice?

Hello and welcome
Just go to http://download.openoffice.org/2.0.4/index.html
Follow that link and you can download the current version (2.0.4) for
your operating system.
Note that it is also available for many other languages than English.
Also on the right side of the page you will see documentation links
which are worth checking out regarding installation and use.
