OpenOffice.org is an alternative office suite that provides more or
less the same functionality as Microsoft Office. There are several
modules, Writer (= Word), Calc (= Excel), Impress (= Powerpoint), Draw
(= Word drawing tools), and Base (= Access). Each of these can open
Microsoft Office files and save in Microsoft Office formats. For
example, Writer can open .doc files and save in .doc format, and so on.
Having said that, there are occasional slight formatting problems; a
document created and saved from Writer (with, e.g., tables) in .doc
format might come out with the formatting of the table slightly
different. Ususally the import/export is flawless, but if the document
has a lot of heavy formatting or uses uncommon features, the chance of
a formatting glitch is increased.

Go ahead and download 2.04 and install it. I think you'll find it meets
your needs. Just tell OOo in the Preferences to save always in
Microsoft Office formats.

I've been using it for over a year as a graduate student and have never
had a problem.
