Below is a good answer
BUT is you updated you operating system
XP for sure does this
then you may have had a nasty thing happen
to your file associations when Windows
go through with their security and OS updates
half the time I get those major updates
I have to go into the internet options
and reset most of my default apps
and sometimes have to reset the file
associations to point to OOo instead of
my old copy of Office

I have been using open office 2.0 for almost a year, and am very
happy with it, but starting about ten days ago, it started saving
my documents in a windows format (I'm not sure just what that
format is except that it gives me a windows logo instead of an
openoffice.odt logo, and when I try to open the file after saving
it, for some reason my machine doesn't register it on the screen
unless I click on "open all files" which does not always allow me
to do), this instead of an open office odt format. What have I
done to cause this, and what can I do to correct it? Clyde

Very likely you accidentally unchecked a box at the bottom of the
Save window. This box is labeled "Automatic file name extension." You
need to open the affected documents and then do a save as with the
same name. At that time make sure that this box is checked.
