I think you need to provide a link to a typical template so that the
process you describe can be examined.
All OpenOffice.org document files are actually zip archive files
containing xml files, just without the .zip filename extension (newer MS
Office document files are also done this way).
From what you've described it looks like your browser is recognising
them as zip files (by looking inside the file - not at any filename
extension) and unpacking it "on the fly".
If that's the case use your browser's context menu (right-click on the
link) and select the "Save Link As" option.
