Try telling OpenOffice "Never register". It's not compulsory to register; OOo is completely free and comes with no consumer protection. On the other hand, you'll get support from this (volunteer) group among others whether you are registered or not.

There is the rub. You never get the chance. Once the "Register Now" option is chosen. Each and everytime you start an OpenOffice application it attempts to connect to the internet register now.

There is something written to the disk either as a file or a registry entry that survives reboots, uninstalls and reinstalls. That something is what I am looking for. Once this is removed then the "Never Install" option can be chosen.
