Having fiddled with Fontwork & even importing a WordArt document, I've
come to the conclusion that your method is the simplest and easiest way
to do this. Insert a frame, make it 1 character wide, and have at it.
Note: use the frame becuase then you can move it around to fit labels
etc. It also allows proper text spacing & formating.
