I agree that the Anti-virus program could cause errors
while you are installing programs.
Some software tell you to disable the antivirus and firewall
software before you install the program(s). NOT a good idea.
Avoid disabling your computer protection software during
install. Even if you are not connected to the Net. I have seen
Trojan warnings pop up even then. Only do this at the last possible result.
Try all other options first, including changing you anti-virus
software - even temporarily - first. I disabled my anti-virus software only
once on an install and I paid the price.
I do not know what antivirus/firewall programs you are using
but I have never had any problems (install or otherwise) with the ones I
use.
FREE version of some of the best ones out there.
AVG by Grisoft (www.grisoft.com) is one of the best Anti-virus programs for
Windows
(Win 98 through XP home and pro, I run all three)
www.free.grisoft.com. (goes directly to the free section)
You could go to there main page, but it is hard to find the free section.
ZoneAlarm (www.zonelabs.com) is also free. It is one of the best Firewalls
out there and there is both a free version and a paid version. A quick link
to
the free download is found here.
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=nav_za
I would also look into a "computer change detection software" such as
WinPatrol (www.winpatrol.com). That little Scotty wooffs at me from time to
time
asking me is I wanted such and such program to be added to my boot, or
if allow them th change my file associations.
I have NEVER has a problem with these two (three) products and the
installation
of software, EXCEPT when there was a Virus/Trojan/etc. in the software
I downloaded and tired to install (the software will tell you).
Never let your guard down with the crazies out there trying to infect
your system with bad version of good "freely downloadable" software.
That is my opinion. Also Why pay for a product when you can most likely
find a free version just as good or better than the paid version.
Is that not what we are downloading OpenOffice for???

This is occurring because you are running an anti-virus program
while installing OpenOffice.org. Viruses write items in the Registry
files, so anti-virus programs are designed to stop that from
happening. When you install a program, it also writes items in the
Registry. Hence, the problem. Firewalls sometimes will cause a
problem also probably for the same reason.
The solution requires five steps done in the following order:
1) Disconnect the computer from the Internet.
2) Close your anti-viral program and firewall.
3) Install OpenOffice.org.
4) Start your anti-viral program and firewall.
5) Reconnect to the Internet.
