"Go to Tools > Autocorrect. Click the middle tab, "Options". About 2/3 of the

Thanks, that fixed it. I re-enabled the 'While typing' option to keep the
other autocorrect functionality.

Fortunately, this (and most other instances where OOo is trying to be
"helpful" but the help is not wanted) can easily be turned off, if you
know the process.

Go to Tools > Autocorrect. Click the middle tab, "Options". About 2/3 of
the way down the list, you'll find "Apply numbering - symbol: *" Click
the checkbox to uncheck it, and your problem will be solved.

While in the Tools > Autocorrect > Options menu path, you might want to
look through the rest of the option to find ones you'd like to have
either on or off.

By the way, I just tried the Format > Autoformat > uncheck While Typing
approach that you tried, and it "works for me" as far as keeping the
autonumbering or any other autoformating features that I tried from
happening. I tried the autocorrect (typing in "teh" which would normally
be corrected to "the") and the correction of two initial capitals
(typing in "THe" which would normally be corrected to "The"). I tried
switching the "While Typing" on and off a few times, and it did switch
these features on and off. So I'm puzzled why it didn't work for you.

The problem, though, with unchecking While Typing is that it turns
EVERYTHING off. In most cases, people like some features and don't like
other features, so it's better to turn them on and off selectively,
through Tools > Autocorrect > Options.
