If Format > AutoFormat > While typing is unchecked, and OOo is still converting your typing into a list, then your installation is somehow broken.

Note that unchecking this will NOT remove the list behavior of things already in the document. If you have an auto-numbered list already, and you uncheck this option, then hit Enter anywhere in the list, you will still get a new list item automatically.

If you want to remove the automatic list behavior from items already in the document, select all the items and click on the "Numbering On/Off" in the toobar. The auto-generated numbering will go away.

I would just add that I felt the same way as you do--at first. Once I learned how Writer's list functions work, I find them pretty helpful for making an outline, especially when it comes to re-arranging things.

You have complete control over how things are indented and spaced for each level through the "Bullets & Numbering" dialog.
