The styles stay with the document that uses them, so you should create
them in your default document / template. If you have a document that
contains all of your needed styles, you can delete the actual content
(the styles should remain in the Stylist), then save that document as
the new default template.

Another practical approach is to create a variety of templates for the
different types of documents you create, then choose the appropriate
template when you go to create a new document.
