What I have done is to highlight the text I want to be converted
to a list. Then I clicked the Bullet On/Off icon. As you say, this
created bullets that are rather large. It also opened the Bullets and
Numbering toolbar. Clicking the Bullets and Numbering icon at the
right end of this toolbar opened the Bullets and Numbering window in
the Bullets tab. I clicked the top left select and OK. The bullets
were changed to the much smaller size.
When I am writing for the OOo Authors' group, I use a template
with custom paragraph styles for both numbered and bullet lists.
(This template is provided by the group with these custom styles
included.) I have learned to use styles for everything as a result of
this experience. It allows changes to be made so much easier than any
other way I know.
