I am having a GREAT deal of trouble using OO to create a resume, save
it as a Word .doc, and then send it to a computer that has Word. The
receiving computer can open it but the format is garbaged. How can
this be avoided?

Did you /really/ save it as a DOC, or did you just name it something.DOC? OOo's ability to read and save DOC files is not perfect (how could it be, when Microsoft has never published the DOC format?), but it works pretty well.
