2006/12/4, Judith Muggia <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

I have a new MacBook running 10.4.8. What may I download to open my
business letters/files in Microsoft WORD for Mac - on back-up disc from
the eMac?
Thanks,
JPM

Hello Judie

You can use OpenOffice.org to read, edit and save your MS Word documents.
OOo reads Word, Excel etc. documents, and can save them in the original
format (doc, xls, pps) or in open document format (odt, ods etc.). MS Office
cannot read open document, but it can read the doc, xls, pps files you make
woth OOo.
You don't even have to save your files as MS Office at home, you can just
mail them with the OOo option Fila > Send > Send as Word/Excel/....

To use OOo on your Mac, you will need a windowing program called X11
(the developers of OOo are working on a 'native' version for Mac, but it
isn't ready yet).
You'll find information on how to install X11 on OOo's Mac porting site:
http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/

There are different version of X11 for Panther (OS X 10.3.x) and Tiger (
10.4.x). You'll find your version of X11 on the Tiger installation disk (you
can use Spotlight to find the package: X11User.pkg). Click on it to install
it.
Apple and OOo propose to upgrade X11 to version 1.1.3 which can be found on
the Apple site:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/x11update2006113.html

Since your MacBook is brandnew, I suppose it's an Intel, not a PPC (see
About this Mac under the Apple logo in the menu top left). Download your
OpenOffice.org from
http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/download/index.html
Click on the *.dmg and follow the instructions (drag the OOo logo to your
applications folder)

You can open OOo from your Applications folder, or from the Dock (after you
drag the OOo logo from Applications to the Dock). When you click on OOo ,
X11 will open first.
The first time, OOo will convert fonts, and ask you to read and approve the
licence and register. Just follow the instructions.

Don't forget to consult the HowTo's and Documentation on the OOo site!
Or come back here with more questions.
Good luck
