Having heard so many screams from people that have had Word reformat
their documents (between versions) that your problem doesn't surprise
me.

I am not a great expert in styles but this is a perfect case for them.
You create a style and then it is quite simple to reformat things.  You
will find that in the conversions, the formatting styles have become
corrupted.  You may have to remove the present formatting first and then
reformat.  Good luck in getting all the old formatting out.  This is
where reveal codes is great.
