1. To answer your specific question about adding a button, go to
Tools>Customise and choose the toolbar you want the button on (I chose
"Standard"). Then click Add. Now, in the left panel choose Format and,
in the right panel, choose Columns. You can now move the button to where
you want. When you press the button you still need to tell it the number
of columns. Someone else may be able to tell you how to write a macro
for this. I haven't studied macros much yet.

Thanks, that's exactly what I needed. I also changed the icon to match
the function (as there was no default icon). Excellent.

However, a much nicer way, IMHO, is to set up a template. I use A4 paper
and I have a template that allows me to print two A5 (A5 is exactly half
A4)pages on a landscaped A4 sheet with a thin line between the A5 pages
so I know where to cut to make two separate pages. Create a new
document, set up the page as you want - two columns, etc. etc. and then
use File>Templates>Save to name and save the template; mine is saved in
"My Templates". The full path for that is defined in
Tools>Options>OpenOffice.org>Paths (in 2.0.4 anyway) but you don't need
to know until it becomes time to back up your templates. When you want
to use the template to create a new document, just do File>New>Templates
and Documents and then choose the template. Using Tools>Customise you
can add a "New from Template" button to a toolbar.

I might consider this, but sometimes I decide halfway through that I
want two columns. It's for homework assignments and often I find that
I have two very narrow sheets. I might even experiment with three
columns.

2. Use Tools>Customise>Keyboard to add, remove or edit keyboard
shortcuts. This will also show you what keys activate which menu
options. Note that on Windows you don't seem able to incorporate the Alt
or Alt Gr[ey] keys into shortcuts; boo-hiss.

Wow, I didn't really expect a solution to that problem. Thanks, Harold.
